Consulting and Training GLOBE Consulting Service Training Programs Consulting “ This study is an excellent piece of work! We could not have done it ourselves. This is invaluable to us as we move forward.” -Concierge Connection Does your firm need help with an international business development project that might benefit from an innovative, high-energy, creative team? Do you need help understanding foreign market potential and how your firm might be positioned to tap into that potential? The GLOBE Center can provide consulting and research services customized to your company’s needs. Projects can range from high-level strategy studies to country research to website localization. GLOBE utilizes virtual teams that can consist of MBA students, Monterey Institute alumni, and/or contracted professionals. What is different about GLOBE consulting/research? There is a gap between global strategy consulting services and localization services. The major strategy consulting firms typically work with CEOs and cover globalization at a very broad level. Yet they do not deal with the details of implementing localized strategies. They recognize only at a superficial level the need to adapt company strategies to the conditions of foreign markets. Localization service providers emphasize the need to adapt products to foreign markets. They provide translation and technical development services for creating multilingual software products, websites, and marketing communications. Many such firms claim to offer globalization consulting services, but none of these offerings can truly be considered management consulting. Localization service providers focus on the processes specific to multilingual information management. What are the needs of companies going global? They need more substantive resources for constructing and implementing ‘glocal’ strategies in all levels of their organizations. Our use of the term “Glocalization” is to underscore the importance of positioning strategies optimally between standardization, that will achieve global economies of scale, and customization that will address local differences. This dichotomy creates complex challenges within companies. There are few if any existing external resources that companies can turn to for addressing these issues. Our philosophy: The GLOBE Center seeks to combine the best in academic theory with practical knowledge and experience. We seek to provide the kind of advice that can lead to effective changes in the global sales and market share of client companies. We seek to cover the full spectrum of global business, cutting across functional areas, company hierarchies, industries, and geographies. Our scope: GLOBE Center Management Consulting and Research service addresses such areas as: • International market and opportunity assessment • International business development strategies • Creating or tailoring global marketing, operational and organizational strategies that meet the demands of foreign markets • Global information management • Global new product development • Localization management How does GLOBE deliver consulting and research services? Specialized methods. GLOBE consultants utilize a number of unique methods and frameworks. At the heart of all these methods are the processes of: • Defining the company’s core strategies • Developing new knowledge about global markets and opportunities • Constructing or tailoring strategies to fit the needs of global markets Team based consultancy. Student consultants/researchers work in teams to promote the best in synergy and brainstorming. Sometimes these teams are virtual, working together across geographies and time zones. Research-based recommendations. Consultants are also international market researchers, applying a combination of theory, experience and market data. Broad scope. GLOBE Center consulting addresses globalization in the full hierarchy of company organization, across the full spectrum of business functions. Case Studies: Select Sector SPDRs is a $18 billion exchange-traded fund (ETF) that divides the S&P 500 into nine industry sectors (e.g., energy, health care, etc.). Its web site provides detailed information tracking for the financial performance of the index. The company turned to GLOBE to conduct a study on how to effectively globalize their marketing communications, especially in regards to the website. The GLOBE team helped to identify potential foreign markets for the product and to determine which types of communications would be most effective based on the needs and preferences of the targeted local markets. The team recommended strategies for clustering countries into regional markets. In addition, the team helped coordinate interactions with 3rd party design and localization vendors, recommending an effective course toward website localization. Concierge Connection is a start-up company with an innovative service idea. The company turned to GLOBE to gain knowledge and to develop strategies for international markets. The MIIS team helped identify potential target countries. They delineated the company’s strategies into key components and attributes, and then conducted specialized market research and analysis to determine those areas that had potential for global standardization and those areas that should be locally adapted. Other recent projects conducted at the Monterey Institute include studies for: • Hewlett-Packard • Sun Microsystems • Clorox • Hunter Technology • Twin Industries • Oracle Corporation • Scan Control, Inc. • Global Portable Buildings, Inc. • Boma Systems For more information about consulting and research services, please contact Mr. David Richins at david.richins@miis.edu.
